Each bale must be checked before opening so that there are no holes in the plastic that may indicate that undesirable fermentation has occurred inside the bale. You can compare the process of fermentation inside a haylage bale to a tin with conserved food in it. Food kept in a well preserved environment keeps for a long time. As soon as the tin is opened the food must be consumed quickly. If the tin is damaged, mould will start growing inside the tin. Haylage conservation is based on the exact same principle. As soon as the bale is opened, fodder needs to be used within 3-4 days.
